I’m BJ Adkins. I’m a disabled veteran, a former foster volunteer, and the founder of Animal-Angels Foundation, a prevention-first nonprofit serving seven counties in Central Alabama. I’ve been recognized in Marquis Who’s Who in America for the work Animal-Angels Foundation is building.
This newsletter covers what actually keeps families and pets together. The math behind prevention economics. The field work, partnerships, and real cases that show what works. The behind-the-scenes of building Animal-Angels Foundation and the Animal Welfare Resource Network we’re using to coordinate prevention across organizations. Region-by-region looks at what’s working in different communities. Legislation and policy that’s moving the field forward, or holding it back. And the families, fosters, and partners who make any of this possible.
Some weeks it’s a long-form essay on prevention economics. Some weeks it’s a short note about what just happened on a call to our Pet Help Desk. Some weeks it’s a deep look at a specific community, program, or piece of legislation.
Most pet surrender begins before the shelter door. Families are often out of options, not out of love. Prevention is the missing piece, and the system steps in too late. This newsletter exists to change that.
