Fifty people who love dogs, all fighting over the one true cause, while the flood keeps rising.

A post went around this week that said the quiet part out loud. When a shelter is full and euthanizing for space, that is not a shelter failure. It is a community failure. The shelter is doing the one thing it exists to do, take animals when there is nowhere else left. Blaming it for being full is like blaming the emergency room for having sick patients.

Fair enough. Then scroll into the comments, and watch what happens.

One person says the real problem is backyard breeders and puppy mills, cranking out litters and dumping what does not sell. The next says no, it is the no-kill movement, warehousing animals and shipping them county to county to pad a live-release number. Another says it is the vets, corporate chains quoting seven hundred dollars for a spay that used to cost a fraction of that. Someone else says it is housing, landlords who will not take pets forcing families to choose between a roof and their dog. Then come the ones who say it is irresponsible owners, plain and simple. And the ones who say it is the missing spay/neuter laws. And the ones who say it is the shelters themselves, mismanaged, killing adoptable dogs while kennels sit open.

Fifty people. Every one of them cares about dogs. And not one of them agrees with the person above them on why this is happening.

Here is what none of them noticed.

They were all right.

Every one of those takes is a real driver. Breeders do flood the system. No-kill math does warehouse animals. A seven-hundred-dollar spay does put sterilization out of reach for the family that needs it most. Breed-based rental bans do force surrenders. Some shelters are mismanaged. All true, all at once. And by spending the whole thread fighting over which one is THE cause, they never noticed that between them, they had just listed the entire prevention agenda.

That is the trap, and the field has been stuck in it for thirty years. We want one villain. One enemy to point at, because a single enemy is satisfying, and because if the problem is them, it is not us. If it is all the breeders, the rest of us are off the hook. If it is all no-kill, spay access is somebody else’s fight. So everybody picks a villain and defends it like a home team, and the argument never ends, because everybody is partly right and nobody is entirely right.

But surrender is not one faucet. It is a dozen faucets running at once, and standing in the flood screaming about which one matters most is not a strategy. It is a way to feel righteous while the water keeps rising.

You do not have to win the argument about the biggest cause. You have to turn off faucets.

Look past the fighting at the actual people in that thread, the ones describing real life instead of assigning blame. A woman priced at seven hundred dollars to spay her cat, more than half her rent, who said plainly she just does not have it. A renter with two senior dogs who nearly ended up living in her car because almost no apartment would take them. A dog who landed with a near-stranger only because her owner got evicted and no rental in the area would allow her breed.

None of those people are the villain. They are the faucets. And not one of them gets helped by winning the comment war over whether breeders or no-kill is worse.

This is the whole reason prevention exists, and why it looks different from everything else in this fight. Prevention is not picking the one true cause and beating everyone who disagrees. It is the layer that works on all of the causes at once. The vet bill that is about to end in a surrender. The deposit the family cannot cover. The spay that is too far and too expensive. The crisis that needs a foster for two weeks, not a permanent goodbye.

We did not build the Pet Help Desk and the Animal Welfare Resource Network because we found the one villain. We built them because there is no one villain. No single program turns off a dozen faucets. So we built the thing that meets a family where they actually are, figures out which faucet is flooding their house, and routes them to whoever can shut it off, before the shelter is ever part of the story.

The people in that thread are not wrong. They are just aiming all their energy at each other instead of at the water.

Stop arguing about the biggest faucet. Start turning them off.
That is the shift to prevention, and it is the only thing in this whole fight that works on all of it at once.
